According to a friend these are Maitake mushrooms, or Hen of the Woods. One of the best-known of all edible wild mushrooms and is one that offers the biggest harvests in many areas with a single Maitake / Hen of the Woods specimen weighing 20 - 50lbs. The are apparently abundant in the Eastern US and are found on large oak trees - a single oak tree can yield as much 100 pounds of Maitake / Hen of the Woods in one season. That said, I am not tempted to break some off and eat them!
